Questions About
Lithium Batteries?
Simplicity is key. A single 24V battery eliminates the need for extra jumper cables and reduces “resistance” in your wiring. It saves space, reduces weight, and means you only have one Battery Management System (BMS) to monitor via the app instead of two.
For most kayak anglers and small bass boaters, yes. Because 24V systems are more efficient (pulling fewer amps than a 12V system for the same work), a 63Ah Thor Lithium battery often provides more “real-world” runtime than two 100Ah lead-acid batteries.
No—not directly. You will fry 12V electronics if you plug them into a 24V source. You must use a 24V-to-12V DC-DC Step-Down Converter or, better yet, run a dedicated small Thor 12V battery (like our 10Ah or 20Ah) for your screens to keep the power clean and free of motor interference.
Lithium likes to be stored at about 50–80% charge. Unlike lead-acid, you don’t need to keep it on a tender all winter. Simply charge it to ~70%, disconnect the terminals to prevent any “parasitic draw” from your boat’s computer or GPS, and it will be ready to rip in the spring.
No. Under-volting a motor can cause it to run hot or not run at all. Always match your battery voltage to your motor’s requirements. If you have a 36V motor, check out our dedicated 36V single-unit batteries.
Yes. GPS anchors like the Minn Kota i-Pilot or Motorguide Pinpoint rely on steady voltage to make micro-adjustments. Lead-acid voltage sags as it drains, making the motor less responsive. Thor Lithium stays at a rock-solid 25V+ until empty, keeping your boat pinned exactly where you want it.
