Questions About
Lithium Batteries?
Think of Amp Hours (Ah) like a fuel tank. If you are just powering a small fish finder or LED lights, the 10Ah–20Ah is plenty. If you are running a LiveScope or a trolling motor all day, you need the 48Ah–63Ah “sweet spot.” For RVs, off-grid cabins, or multi-day expeditions, the 100Ah–175Ah models ensure you won’t run dry.
Yes. You can connect them in Parallel (Positive to Positive) to increase your capacity (Ah) or in Series (Positive to Negative) to increase your voltage (e.g., two 12V batteries to make 24V). We recommend using batteries of the same Ah and age for the best results.
Absolutely. Lead-acid batteries shouldn’t be drained past 50% without damage. Thor Lithium allows for 100% Depth of Discharge. This means a 100Ah Thor battery gives you twice the usable “run time” of a 100Ah lead-acid battery, plus it’s 70% lighter, which helps your boat or vehicle move more efficiently.
We don’t recommend it. Most old chargers have a “desulfation” mode that can spike voltage and trip the Battery Management System (BMS). To protect your 10-year investment, use a Thor Lithium-optimized charger that follows the correct LiFePO4 charging profile.
Thor Lithium excels in the heat where lead-acid fails. In the cold, our Heated Series (100Ah+) is a game-changer; it uses internal heaters to warm the cells so you can safely charge even in sub-zero temperatures. Without heaters, lithium shouldn’t be charged below 32°F, though it can be discharged (used) down to -4°F.
The most common mistake is using a charger with an “Auto-Repair” or “Equalization” mode. Additionally, never charge your battery if it has been submerged in water or shows signs of physical damage. Always charge in a well-ventilated area using a dedicated lithium-profile charger.
